Hitchcock has a deliberate approach to The Birds. He introduces the characters Daniels Brenner well before any action. The suspense is increased by this. Some memorable roles are performed by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former girlfriend, Annie. The screenplay was written by popular writer Evan Hunter, better known under the pseudonym Ed McBain, from a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier. The use of electronic sound rather than a music score was very effective. Hitchcock investigated a strange event that happened on the ground in Capitola California, where sooty seabirds attacked in 1961. The birds were believed to be aggressive because of diatom poisoning.
